A field being the most lucrative in medicine depends upon the times that you are living in. For example, cosmetic surgery has periods when it is in demand. There are also moments when the demand is on a decline. Generally though, cosmetic surgery provides a lucrative career to the practicing physician. Today, people are becoming more concerned about their looks. They are willing to pay a lot of money and endure the perils and pain of surgery even if there is no health indication to operate. Because of this, cosmetic surgeons are getting their fill of patients.

Why is cosmetic surgery so lucrative?

Cosmetic surgery is lucrative because a lot of people want to be nipped and tucked to conform to society’s ideals of beauty. Simple operations, such as rhinoplasty and liposuction, can already cost a lot to perform. In a day, a cosmetic surgeon can perform several of these simple operations. This setup is unlike that of other lucrative fields of medicine, where an operation can be complicated and can take time to perform.

What are the possible problems with such a career?

The main problem with the career is that there will be people constantly opposing it. There are people who believe that cosmetic surgery is wrong. Patients who undergo cosmetic surgery are not covered by insurance. So, the surgeons mostly have to depend on gaining and keeping wealthy patients. Also, during times of crisis, there is a tendency to forget about having cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery, after all, is optional. During times of crisis, people would prioritize emergency expenses.

What are lucrative alternatives?

There are many other lucrative medical careers. These other fields may require more skills and additional expertise. Examples are neurosurgery and cardiovascular surgery. However, the ailments to be treated are rarer and each operation can be more complex. So, it really depends on what type of medical career you prefer to have.

Cosmetic surgery can be your best bet for a lucrative career in medicine, as long as the rest of the parameters are just right. You will do well when there is no economic crisis to contend with.
